what's wrong with this?

svrmgrl
connect internal/password
shutdown immediate {or startup}
exit

we use these on nt4 with 8i everyday...
am i missing the point of the question? we also use the services to startup/shutdown oracle when we reboot, but the script works fine if you want to run it unattended.

we used the service to do "clean" shutdowns with 8.0.3 too. why to you say 'starting with 8i'?
