MTS vs. Dedicated w/ connections coming behind firewall

Interesting discovery I made today..
I have a linux box sitting at home behind a firewall, w/ local IP, using NAT (the box doesn't have a 'world ip'), running 9i

a dedicated connection works into my production box (SERVER=DEDICATED) (many many miles away)
an MTS connection doesn't

Possible explanation?
.......
We use Oracle 8.1.6-8.1.7 on Solaris 2.6, 2.7 boxes
