since you reference truss -- you are on unix.

what process are you trussing? we are a multi-process thing. pmon, smon, dbwr, lgwr, dedicated server, shared server, what?

Also -- did you look IN the database to see what its doing?? Perhaps there is a job/query that is running at that point in time.
