Oracle Internet Directory (OID): how to implement 8i users

We are currently intending to implement OID. We also have several Oracle 8i databases with a huge number of users. Many users have accounts on several instances and different passwords on each of them.

As far I understand we would have to migrate in some way the current users into OID.

But how does this work with roles and object privileges which are currently in place? And how knows OID which user has an account on which instance?

Thanks for any help
