Not sure exactly what you mean by backup here... if you mean to shutdown the Oracle instance and then backup the /u01 partition on your machine, assuming that is where all your Oracle data files are, then you are actually by definition doing a cold backup. If you mean to just copy the files while the database is still up and running then this will not give you a backup with guaranteed recoverability!
