Can't give you a complete answer without more information. Hopefully, your database is running in archivelog mode. If that is the case you can try to issue a recover datafile command to the datafile that contains the block (which you didn't list from your alert log). If that doesn't work, you would have to restore the damaged file from tape and recover it using the archived logs. Recoveries require practice and a knowledge of what is happening inside the database. Since you admit you have been "winging it", then you may not even have the necessary backup strategies in place to recover from this. If you are not running in archivelog mode then you are probably doomed. You would have to restore from your last cold backup and lose everything from that point.

Also, RMAN (recovery manager) is a tool to perform backups and recoveries. You don't just use it for recoveries. If you have not been backing up with it, it is useless to you. Received on Thu Sep 20 2001 - 22:09:55 CDT
