Can't connect to Oracle

Hi

I'm having troubles connecting to Oracle (8.1.7) from another machine using thin drivers via Resin or Tomcat. If Resin or Tomcat is located on the same server as Oracle I can easily do it!
Is there anywhere there's a log file from Oracle, that writes something?

Another question: Why isn't the classes12.zip (or jar) file included with 8.1.7 on Linux? On Windows it's included with the 8.1.6 version of Oracle.
