I wouldn't know about Linux, but on Win2000 we had a problem with the Universal Installer when the host had a Pentium IV chip. The problem is associated with the Java Runtime included with the Installer. I suggest you go through Metallink and search Bug #1507768. There is a workaround with Win2000.

Thanks for you reply but there is no init.ora on the server yet ! this problem occurs as I am starting the "runInstaller" script..
