Sure. Here is how I see it. 8170 was released before W2K was around (or shortly after, can't remember the exact month). It's quite possible that W2K might have broken something inside 8170. Hence your problems. So what support is asking you to do is not unreasonable. Patches don't just fix the list of problems you see in the notes. It might well be that 8172 fixes the problem you have. But if it doesn't, then it may provide more info for them to proceed. Hence their request. I would follow it. If the thing still happens, then they can look at it with all the latest info.

If you're concerned that 8172 might break something else, don't. Usually patches in ORACLE don't do that. Note: I said *usually*! But in your case, ora-600 is not sustainable, so do it: install the patch.
