Thanks to every one for the advices.

The Oracle server we are running on is 8.1.7, and we are not confident to start using Oracle 9i at the moment for a mission critical application.

Mark, the first solution you gave was the one I was thinking of. But I am willing to study other possibilities, so I am sure not to miss something interesting. I would so like a little more details on your second solution, as I don't really see how to implement it while keeping the primary key and foreign key constraints.
