Hi there,

So you're going for an IBM ESS ... you know it only supports RAID5 and JBODs ? And you know you want
RAID1 on some important files like redo, system, temp, rbs ... What I did was configure 2 8packs as JBOD (cross-cluster) and mirror them using the OS LVM (I was on AIX).
For all the other 8packs we used RAID5. We defined equal sized luns over them
Don't let the IBM tech guys fool you - they will say "why use RAID1 - our RAID5 is much faster with our 'optimized' routine in ESS"... the truth is that when a disk crashes in a JBOD configured 8pack they can not simply replace the disk in 5min. This means extra work for the IBM tech guy - so they try to convince you to use RAID5 all the way ...
Also we used multiple short wave fiber channel adpaters using DPO (data path optimising) it SCREAMS ! :-)
Overall we're still pretty amazed about the speed of this thing - we use an F20 - 3TB - 6 FC (DPO) - 10 SSA adapters - 16GB cache we've spread our DB all over it...

SSA I/O I/O Its off to SHARK I go !
