and in csh you'll need to use:

 setenv ORACLE_SID ma214
 setenv ORACLE_HOME /sysadm/app/oracle/product/8.1.7

I always include:

 setenv ORACLE_BASE /sysadm
 setenv ORACLE_DOC $ORACLE_BASE/doc
 setenv ORACLE_TERM xterm

 setenv TNS_ADMIN $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/tnsnames.ora
