Bit of a huge topic. Is Oracle already installed on machine 2? Are all your environment variables set? Is that tape backup made hold or cold? Does it include the online redo logs? Does it include the controlfile? What version is it?

The short story would be (assuming the tape is of a closed, whole consistent database backup) simply restore everything from tape to a location of your choice. Using a 'backup controlfile to trace' tracefile created earlier from the live system on machine 1, you then blow away the existing controlfiles (which are pointing at locations on machine 1) and recreate them so that they correctly reference the file locations on Machine 2. You should then be able to open the database on machine 2, and hence do your export.

What you're basically after is cloning your production system -it just so happens that your clone is going to be constructed from a prior backup. There are plenty of resources for cloning techniques... you could try, for example, www.geocities.com/howardjr2000 (but only if you;ve got IE), and look for the courses page. Either under DBA or under Backup and Recovery (I forget where I put it), you'll find a short script example for cloning.
