A little more data. On 8.1.5 on WindowsNT, the same test does not give the ORA-24345, but only 4097 of the 32000 bytes gets returned. It automatically truncated the 32000 byte string to 4097 bytes without returning an error.

This still seems like a bug since I can't find any documented limit on the return string length other than the 32k limit.
