No, it is not. (OK, I'm going to show my age, but here goes anyway...<G>) AS/400's run an operating system called OS/400, in which the database and filesystem are one and the same, called DB2/400 (assuming OS/400 V3R1 or later). The DB2/400 database and the OS/400 filesystem are the same thing, and are inseperable. DB2/400 is actually a real database, and "yes", it has PK's, UK's, FK's, triggers, indexes, etc. They're somewhat clunky, and most AS/400 systems analysts have their heads too far up their asses to stop and understand how to use these features, but they do exist. With this in mind, Oracle Corp decided that it was not particularly useful nor easy to market an Oracle database that runs on top of a DB2 database. So, the answer is no, there is no version of the Oracle database server that runs on an AS/400, or at least none that I'm aware of...<g>.

There are gateway products that make a DB2/400 database *look like* an Oracle database to an Oracle database (Oracle Transparent Gateway for AS/400, an Oracle Corp product) and gateway products to make an Oracle database *look like* a DB2/400 database to a DB2/400 database (used to be called Oracle Access Manager for DB2/400, also an Oracle Corp product). With TG4AS400, you ran an Oracle listener on the AS/400, and then an Oracle db could access it through a dblink. With OAM400, AS/400 SQL could connect and talk to an Oracle db through a DRDA entry (somewhat similar to a dblink). I say *look like* in both cases because there were some limitations.

Now, much of this could have changed since the last time I touched an AS/400 (about 4-5 years ago), but I seriously doubt it. Here's a hoot: next time you talk to your AS/400 guys, ask them the version of OS/400. If they say V3R1 or anything later (like V3R2, V4R1, V4R2), ask them if they have DB2/400 installed. If they tell you "no", then you know they fit into the category I mentioned above...<g>.

Good luck and HTH!
Dave
