I think the Platform specific Installation Guide / possibly also the Platform specific Administration guide (PDFs usually - downloadable from http://docs.oracle.com/) mention startup scripting, and how to incorporate it into the run control directories.

I myself don't use startup scripts because if a server crashed, or if oracle caused the server to crash / panic (can happen) then either way, surely you want to be the one starting up the databases, in case there are any problems.

In fact, the only time I have seen a database ask for media recovery was actually caused by the Os (Solaris 2.6) rebooting 3 times in quick succession whilst part of the way through launching Oracle each time - this totally messed up the SCN coherency across datafiles and controlfiles thus prompting the media recovery message.
