Oracle 8.0 OCI padding strings

We've recently upgraded from the 7.3 OCI to the 8.0 OCI.  We noticed
that on the return of OCIStmtFetch are fields are padded with spaces
if the data is smaller than the field size.  This wasn't occuring in
7.3.  Is there any way to correct this, other than rtim'ing the SELECT
in the procedure?
