If I remember aright, the microsoft drivers require version 7 support files which is a pain because of maintaining multiple homes when you also want to use version 8 client software.
The ODBC drivers from Microsoft and Oracle are notoriously buggy. I never found a version that worked properly, but stuck with a driver with bugs I could work around.
I don't know if the OLEDB drivers are less buggy.
