I've got a chapter in my book, Informix DBA Survival Guide, on the subject, if you happen to have a copy lying around. It's got a lot of the "soft" stuff, such as training and mentoring, that you don't see in most DBA job descriptions, but that I believe are some of the most important DBA functions.
