RMAN Error from register database

I have installed a Recovery Catalog on an Oracle 8.0.4 DB, and, from RMAN80, I have connected to that database 'connect rcvcat rman/****@DB01;' and to the target database 'connect target system/*****@DB02;' both statements succeed.

Then, when I do 'register database;', I get an error stack that has the following at its root:

'RMAN-10031: ORA-1422 occurred durring call to DBMS_RCVCAT.REGISTERDATABASE' ORA-1422 is referred to elsewhere in the stack as 'ORA-01422: exact fetch rerurns more than requested number of rows'

ORA-06512 identifies RMAN.DBMS_RCVCAT, line 223.

Can anyone explain what has happened and why? Is there something I can do to correct this?
