In the spirit of Thomas Kyte - I felt I had to share this as I read the SQL Reference manual:

select .... for update wait {integer};

It seems you can now specify a number of seconds to wait for a locked row rather than having only the extremes of NOWAIT or 'wait indefinitely'.

(I haven't proved it's true yet - I'm waiting for my 64-bit HP-UX to arrive).
