Installing Oracle 9i on RedHat 7.1 link errors

Scenario:
  Oracle 9i Enterprise Edition downloaded from technet.oracle.com   RH 7.1 system - with make 3.79/binutil 2.10/glibc 2.2.2   Sun JRE 1.3.1
  Blackdown 1.1.8-v3
  No existing oracle installation

Link errors on installation:

Many errors like this:

"Error invoking target install of makefile

/u01/app/product/9.0.1/plsql/lib/ins_plsql"

"Error invoking target relink of makefile

/u01/app/product/9.0.1/lib/ins_precomp"

"Error invoking target toolinstall

/u01/app/product/9.0.1/lib/ins_ldap"

I have seen several other similar posts but none with a satisfactory answer. I'd appreciate any help.
