This behaviour can be caused by several reasons, but you send no informations at all, so it is impossible to help you. Informations like OS platform + version, ORA version, alert log, dump files from bdump or udump, ps (if UNIX based system is used) are necessary to solve the problem. Check Elton Saulsberry's mail (2001-07-30 09:59:02 PST) for example of perfect problem reporting (so uncommon in this group).
