We have a positive bevy of contributions this week, thanks to all concerned. Only one more and we will have got to the half-century.

Remember that this FAQ is a co-operative effort. Anyone can contribute, anyone can air follow-up questions. If you think an answer may be incomplete or unsuitable, raise a question here (or with the author), rational sharing and discussion can only improve the quality of everyone's understanding.

Don't wait for a question to appear on the hit-list: if you can think of a good question that isn't waiting for an answer, create a page for it and send it in.
