Preferred Credentials in Enterprise Manager

I've set up Oracle 8.1.7 on Linux-Mandrake 7.2 as a learning environment and would like to use Enterprise Manager to schedule jobs such as backups.

Unfortunately, I keep getting "Authentication Error"s and can't nail down which ID/password is the problem.

Here's the setup on the Linux box:
Oracle 8.1.7
OEM 2.2.x (whatever came with 8.1.7)
Oracle User(Linux): oracle/oracle

SID: MANAGE -- Oracle Enterprise Server repository repository owner: sysman/manage

SID: LEARN -- Learning database user: scott/tiger

sys & system accounts still have default passwords.

I've created the repository using 'emca' and started both dbsnmp and OEM.

I've created a password file, re-granted SYSDBA and SYSOPER roles to sys to flush out to the pw file.

OEM administrator account: sysman/manage (I did change this one from the default)

Current preferred credentials are:
<Default> node oracle/oracle
<Default> database sys/change_on_install as sysdba

I've tried almost every combination of accounts on the preferred credentials, but still can't get a backup job to run.

Can anyone give me some troubleshooting help?
