Although Larry E. claims that Oracle 9i is much more reliable than 8i I would not take the risk migrating to the first sub-minor release of a new major release. This is especially since 9i in not yet fully doumented on the technet.

8.1.7 on Linux is pretty mature compared to 8.0 and 8.1.6 although there are some known issues. But no Oracle release is and will ever be bug free.

I haven't found a desupport notice for 8.1.7 and expect it to be supported for a rather long time.
