The rule is simply this: to be able to guarantee complete recovery of all committed transactions, you need to supply the entire set of redo since the time the last complete backup started.

And that rule holds true whether you are talking hot or cold backup.

The only difference taking hot backups makes is that the phrase 'time the last complete backup *STARTED*' becomes all-important. Given a database with 3 tablespaces, you could back one up on Monday, one on Tuesday and one on Wednesday. You need to retain all redo generated since MONDAY, since that was the *start* of the backup cycle.
