Others will doubtless come up with more expert answers, but I would start by investigating the utlbstat.sql and utlestat.sql scripts. They give you an overall first impression of DB performance and whether there are any issues with your instance.
Using them doesn't have a big performance hit either, which is the disadvantage of going straight to tracing with a production system. If you don't know what these scripts are, there's plenty of info. to be had on the net about them. Happy reading :-)
