Look in your alert log ($ORACLE_BASE/admin/$ORACLE_SID/bdump). You probably did not change the kernel parameters in your /etc/system file as recommended in the installation guide. The assistant (or even you, manually) will not be able to start the instance due to the inability to create a shared memory segment of a certain size. Change the kernel parameters, bounce the system and restart dbca. Should work out fine.
