I started using RMAN in 8i. I think it is better than custom built scripts. It should be even better in 9i. One apparent difference is that with dynamic scipts you explicitly put a tablespace in backup mode and then out of backup mode. While with RMAN there is no such need. The RMAN command syntax is actually very easy to learn and intuitive.
