All,

We are planning a massive upgrade from Oracle 7.2.3 to Oracle 8.06 then to Oracle 8i, while upgrading from Solaris 2.5.1 to Solaris 8. We get very little annual downtime with this database and want to make the most of our window.

My main concern is that during this upgrade the hardware will remain identical (Sun E450 4x300, 1GB RAM) and traditionally with ALL software, the newer versions are fatter and slower. Most software developers assume that as you move versions you will also shed your old hardware for new hardware. In our case this does not hold true. Additionally, we are going from Solaris 2.5.1 to Solaris 8 and I know Solaris 8 is fatter.

If anyone has ever attempted this, please let me know how it went and what issues and/or problems you have encountered. I would really appreciate you sharing your experiences.

Thanks!
