I have 9i installd on redhat 7.1, which is kernel 2.4.2:



[xux_at_localhost ~]$ uname -a

Linux localhost.localdomain 2.4.2-2 #1 Sun Apr 8 20:41:30 EDT 2001 i686 unknown

[oracle_at_localhost ~/901/ora/bin]$ ./sqlplus

Therefore, methinks that you don't have to upgrade kernel :-).
