How can I use an encryption on a column of certain table?

Hi

Is there anyway I can encrypt one column of table? Something like that:

Table Customers

Cust_name Credit_card_num

Tom              &*@(!#)!$&*@($
Jane              $@&*()!$)#@!&$

If there is way can be done, please let me know how and what has to be done on application level to use it.
