Another Pipe question

Is there any way to know if an Oracle pipe has a message in it? The view v$db_pipes does have a pipe_size column but even after unpacking all the messages, the size doesn't immediately change in that view. Also, I think pipes mantain an "overhead" size and its not same for different pipes.

We would like to do a clean database shutdown and want to make sure that there are no messages in any of our pipes.

Thanks.
