need help cold fusion nt with oracle unix

hi,
i need help setting up data access for cold fusion administrator running on windows 2000 server to a unix based oracle database. my oracle DBA set me up an "instance" of a database and i need to connect my cold fusion server to it. i do not know oracle, i am used to informix. can anyone tell me what "host string" is and how i can obtain it? do i have to have oracle running on my server to connect native (not odbc)?
