Since 20-jun-2001 the problem is solved!

I have forwarded all your help and hints to our database and VMS - system administrators and discussed with them. The problem is gone away in two steps by adjusting memory parameters in VMS and database parameters in Oracle. First we reached a state where Oracle continued to run without hungups but very slow (5-10 time slower than version 7). Then we got some new adjustment from Oracle support which acellerated the DB unbelievable. It is now running at the same speed as version 7 or better. No additional patches were installed.
