The installation procedures for Oracle8i and Oracle9i are quite different.

RedHat did some tweaking to the binutils package to facilitate the Oracle8i installation on RedHat 7.1, but at the same time Oracle did some tweaking to Oracle9i (upgraded from glibc2.1 to glibc2.2) that broke the Oracle9i installation on RedHat 7.1 :-(

Anyway, to install Oracle8i on RedHat 7.1 you need to execute the following commands before starting runInstaller:

        export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5
        . /usr/i386-glibc21-linux/bin/i386-glibc21-linux-env.sh

        ^- Note the dot.

Make sure you've got a lot of RAM before you try.
