There will be a Solaris 9 for Intel/x86. Whether there will be a native Solaris for Intel/IA64 is a whole other issue but not really relevant since Oracle 9i will still support other 32bit systems.
The comments in the Metalink document about Oracle's 64bit commitment is a red herring. Oracle wants to reduce costs associated with supporting multiple platforms as it has done over the last 5 years. Since Solaris sparc and Solaris Intel/x86 are 99% identical, I don't really see much of savings for Oracle.
Oracle management is under the mistaken impression that its customers running on top of x86 UNIX will just transition to Linux or wait (how long? its been at least 3 years since we heard about Merced) until Intel, IBM, and HP release their IA64 solutions. My guess is that many of those customers will move to NT/SQLServer.
Anyway, I hope you will write Oracle's management and ask them to reconsider.
You should complain to your sales rep as well.
