SQL7 and SQL2000 have been pretty darn stabile on our compaq 5500 and 8500s on standard raids and our SAN.

We have another group using Oracle on Sun and it work fine also.

MSSQL is a bit less $$ for many of our projects, but what is use depends on project and mostly the talent / experience available to accomplish a task.

I have access to more folks with good sql development skill than oracle right now
