i can't think of a good reason you would want to run oracle parallel server (OPS) on a single machine. testing on a single machine is NOT the same as testing on two machines. (unless, of course, you happen to have a spare E10000 laying around.)

the "oracle parallel server" option is available (for an extra cost) with enterprise edition only. OPS is NOT available with standard edition. if you have enterprise edition, rerun the oracle universal installer, and select "custom". the parallel server option should be selectable from somewhere from the expansive list of options.

the operating system must provide support for "shared storage". this is absolutely needed for a real OPS cluster environment. (on HP-UX, this support is provided by MC/ServiceGuard for OPS. i'm not sure what folks are using on sun solaris machines, but i'm thinking it's probably the "cluster" software from veritas.
