Modem connections?

Hi all,

I'm in a situation for which I would normally prescribe replication..the client has approximately 300 local sites which require that update information be replicated from time to time between the local offices. The problem is that these offices are not permanent so even though the volume of data to exchange is very minimal there is not a permanent network infrastructure.
Is it possible to connect to a remote database via high speed modem, or is this totally unfeasible?

Any thoughts or alternate ideas are deeply appreciated.
