Logminer appears to be a unique product designed to be able to read the REDO log files and actually has it's roots in Oracle Rdb (formerly DEC Rdb). This feature was designed specifically for a very large service organization to be able to pull specific transaction types to/from specific tables to be loaded into a reporting database. This is very useful since they wanted only transaction type y from table xyz to be pulled from a 6Tb database. Much easier to pull it from the logs than to try and extract it at a given interval from the huge table it was stored in.
