I'd also recommend anybody new to Oracle to look at the Oracle9i Partner Adoption Packs (soon to become Oracle9i by Example) on OTN at http://otn.oracle.com/products/oracle9i/index2.htm?Info&htdocs/9ipak/listing .htm
While written for Oracle9i, many of the examples/scripts etc also work in Oracle8i
