german chars won't run under linux?

Hi

we change oracle 8i database from win nt to linux. export / import runs

well (thx again to some people in this forum). but now i've got a new prob. some characters that only exist in german

won't store in the database? in german they called umlaute . in the  

init.ora i set nls language but this doesn't changes anything. where

should be the problem?
is there something with general characters in unix and windows?

may someone can help me.
