Mike,

As configured for Oracle?
Well, first off, the 3000 was deprecated for the ML530.

IF - you're running Oracle Enterprise Edition with a pair of 1 GHz CPUs, (2000 UPUs)
why care as to the hardware costs? as its $200,000 (retail) for the Oracle server license alone.

At that point, does it really matter if the server is $15K or $35K?

So a bit of reality hits, and you decide that you'll just get by with Standard Edition with a single 1 GHz CPU. Welcome to the real world. Now you're down to a $15K Oracle Server license, and the hardware costs matter.

Base Model

256 MB RAM
1 GHz CPU
1 x 9 GB ultra2 hard drive
Smart Array controller - 5302
2 drive cages - internal
$7022

RAM
2 GB - with room to expand to 4 GB.
+$4330

Storage
12 x 18 GB drives (2 full cages)
drives cost you NO UPUs.
put all the drives in that the cabinet will hold. You WILL be adding external cabinets and RAID controllers for a single megabyte more.
maybe some 36 GB drives would be a good idea.

that works out to 6 x 17.1 GB - for 102 GB net storage. Its a little under the spec of 109 GB - but its actual storage - not vendor-size numbers.

So now you're at $17,352.
Add in for 4 hour support, an operating system, tape drive + tapes and backup software.
Add redundant fan, power supply, 2 gigabit ethernet adapters (gotta balance them)
Put more memory in the RAID cache - I'll bet that its low. with the MS W2K tax of $750
you're now at $25,469.

TIME TO LOOK AT DELL. hth,
