I think, if you back up datafiles using 'alter tablespace x begin backup' then you'll have fuzzy backed up datafiles, because oracle doesn't know how much the operating system copy or tar command has already read from datafile, while dbwr is still continuously making changes in it.

whenever you restore this datafile, it'll be fuzzy e.g. not consistent. that's why oracle needs to write whole db blocks in redo logs when having a tablespace/datafile in online backup mode.

i might not be 100% correct.
