I believe in one server with one version of Oracle absolutely.

I strongly prefer one server with one Oracle instance only.

Anything more is dangerous technically and financially.

If I had to support 8.1.6 and 8.1.7 at the same time I would use 8.1.7 and set compatibility to 8.1.6.
