Could you verify your sqlnet.ora please? It is in $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin or /etc It looks like it doesn't have the line
names.default_domain = rockets.net
names.default_zone = rockets.net
which is on other platforms definitely a reason for getting an error when you don't use it in your tnsping parameter.
