Well it sounds like you've already solved your problem. But for what it's worth, I remember having a helluva time in Oracle 7.3.4 getting databases to start automatically. It turned out to be that if you had tabs in your init.ora file it wouldn't start automagically. I don't know if that's been fixed in Oracle8 but you might want to keep it in mind in the future.
