Oracle access through firewall

Our application is at this point a totally internal, Powerbuilder front-end. We are, however, about ready to deploy some web-based tools originally intended for internal use only, but we realized our external customers could make use of some of these. So now I'm looking for ways to provide access without totally exposing our server to the outside world. If we deployed a small server on the outside of the firewall, what would be the best way to provide access? Replication the database to this server? I would prefer to avoid replication if possible.

Thanks,
